Freeze the Water Bring the People

March 9, 2025

Neighbors in Whitefield were thrilled when the famous ice rink on the Common was brought back to life this winter! The rink has become a tradition and a sense of pride for residents. However, due to weather and volunteer scarcity, the Common sat iceless for many years.

The rink, located in the center of Town adds to the picturesque, New England charm of Whitefield. It was clear after talking to many residents how much they missed it. When neighbors ask for something, it’s go time.

We convened a meeting one Wednesday evening for all those interested in bringing the rink back. Thanks to a motivated crew and extremely cold weather, the rink was up and running just one week later. The feedback was overwhelming. Folks have commented endlessly on how great it is to drive by and see children skating with their friends and family. To kick off the rink comeback, we held a welcome back party for all neighbors far and wide. It was amazing!

A few weeks later, this same crew banded together to host a Doug’s Winter Party community potluck/party. Doug is an 85-year-old man from PA, who went viral after inviting his neighbors over for a party, via handwritten notes. The invitation read, 4pm- Until the cops come. It went viral, so our crew decided to join the moment as did the Whitefield Police Department!

With the energy still abuzz, we decided to throw a School Vacation Glow Skate party on the Common after 5-year-old Whitefield neighbor Leroy requested it. It was absolute magic to see the kids with their families and friends laughing, skating, drinking hot cocoa, knocking over milk crates, and having a blast.

With each skate, each laugh, and each gathering, Whitefield proves that small-town life is anything but small. The best part? We’re just getting started.
