SUMMARY:Community WEEK!
DESCRIPTION:In 2024\, we helped to pull together a Stratford Park Clean-Up Day on the afternoon of June 29th.  A dozen hardy volunteers tackled community improvement projects in the rain that day\, and gathered at DeBanville’s afterwards for a slice of pizza\, drinks and live music to celebrate.  We accomplished the following together at the Back Street River Park in the north of town: \n\nBrush clean-up alongside the river\nBuilt two new benches to replace old ones by the basketball court\nCleaned out & repainted the ballfield dugouts\nStained the River Launch sign\n\nThis year we are planning round two and calling it a Community Day! (Now called Community Week and extended to work around weather.) Here’s what’s in store for projects: \n\n\nStratford Public School Community Clean-Up projects- rescheduled to Tuesday May 27\, 1-3 PM (due to poor weather) \n\nReviving school garden beds\, led by school staff\, with younger grades.\nLitter pickup for older students.\nRepainting school dugouts.\n\nProjects to take place all week\, starting Saturday\, May 24th\, 2025 at 9 AM (please sign up to be connected with a project leader by emailing britni@thecbh.org)  Thank you leaders! \n\nPainting benches led by Molly Carr\nPavilion clean up led by Sarah Kennett\nStaining benches & picnic tables led by Suzanne Goulet\nFlower planter cleanup led by Jamie Davis\nBrush clean-up along the edge of the park (contact town office)\n\nWe are going to kick off this Community Week on 5/24 at 5 PM\, by enjoying live music at DeBanville’s in Bloomfield\, VT!  At the end of the week\, all volunteers that helped out are invited to a pizza party at 5 PM on 5/30\, sponsored by DeBanville’s.  We thank them for their partnership & support on this effort\, as well as the Stratford Public School and Stratford Town Office.   \n\n\nTogether we can do so much to beautify Stratford!  We love to have fun and get stuff done!  If you are interested in volunteering for a project\, please contact Britni Haley at britni@thecbh.org or 802-277-1974.  Feel free to send a text.  See Facebook Event for updates.

SUMMARY:Family Village series
DESCRIPTION:A series of four “Family Village” sessions will be taking place on the Tuesday afternoons of April 15\, April 22\, May 6 and May 13\, from 4:00-5:00 PM\, downstairs at the Colebrook Public Library (use rear entrance).  Colebrook area parents and caregivers who want to be part of a supportive network and are interested in working together to make positive change for children in their community are invited to join in these supportive group meetings.   \n“At the New Hampshire Statewide Family Engagement Center\, our mission is to bring together families\, schools\, and communities to enhance our children’s education and the community as a whole. One of the ways we try to accomplish this goal is with the Family Villages curriculum.” notes lead organizer\, Wendy Conway.  She explains\, “Family Villages is a framework to build mutual support networks for families\, adapted from Dana Suskind’s Parent Nation program. This group brings caregivers together to develop their personal strengths and goals\, to enhance our communities as good places to raise our children.  During these sessions\, parents will also develop some sort of goal and begin working towards it together. For example\, we had a facilitator who completed a dad’s family village and the goal they established and are still working on is to create a father’s group held by local fathers\, and this group is beginning to thrive! The possibilities are endless.” \nThe event is being hosted by the NH Statewide Family Engagement Center\, and supported by The Community Builders Hub who will be providing light refreshments.  To register\, please contact Wendy Conway at conway@compactnh.org.  Participants will receive a $20 electronic gift card for each session they attend.  More information on the NH Statewide Family Engagement Center can be found at nhsfec.org/.   \n

SUMMARY:Wellness Center Gathering
DESCRIPTION:The North Country Community Recreation Center (NCCRC) board of directors invites community members from northern Coos County\, NH and northeastern Essex County\, VT to attend an informational gathering on February 13\, 2025\, from 6:30-8:00 PM at The Tillotson Center\, located at 14 Carriage Lane\, Colebrook\, NH. The goal will be to get stakeholders actively involved in the development of a Wellness Center\, at the former North Country Community Recreation Center in Colebrook. \nA presentation of the background of the “Rec Center” will be shared\, along with the plans to develop it into a Wellness Center\, and ways the community can be involved moving forward. The facility\, located at 33 Rec Center Road\, closed its doors in 2020 after being open for 15 years. The space previously offered an indoor public pool\, ice skating rink\, playground\, volleyball court\, party room and well attended recreation programs for all ages. Unfortunately\, this model proved unsustainable. \nUpper Connecticut Valley Hospital (UCVH) has been leading the redevelopment of the property into a Wellness Center over recent years with the NCCRC board\, and several sizable grants have been secured for the project. Now the organizations are seeking local stakeholders to get involved to bring the project forward. The current redevelopment proposal\, which was created with a thorough business plan and feasibility study\, has been voted down by the NCCRC board\, who feels the project scale may not be feasibly supported by our local area’s current economy and population. However\, the group is still interested in exploring alternative down-sized options\, to see how organizations\, businesses and clubs can join together to fulfill community needs and utilize the property and building as a central Wellness Center to serve the region. \nChairperson for the NCCRC board\, Brian LaPerle notes\, “The Rec Center board is hopeful community members are interested in working on solutions to hurdles we are facing.” CEO of UCVH\, Greg Cook adds\, “Finding the right pathway forward with greater community involvement will be instrumental.” Britni Haley of the Community Builders Hub is partnering to help organize the event\, as it aligns with the feedback she’s received from the public for issues of importance in the region\, including youth opportunities\, gathering places and wellness support. \nLeaders and members of local community organizations and clubs\, school board members\, town administrators\, wellness related businesses\, and residents with ideas or interest in using the facility or being involved in this process are encouraged to attend. There will be opportunities presented to join teams working on different aspects of the project. More information is available online at the News & Events pages of www.ucvh.org or by contacting Brian LaPerle at brian@northerntire.com or 603-237-1457. \nUPDATE ON 2/11/25: \nWe are thrilled to see the level of interest the public is showing in being involved with the Wellness Center development! The event is coming right up this Thursday evening\, and we are hopeful for a great collaborative effort to unfold. \nAfter receiving several requests for a virtual/recorded option for this meeting\, we are providing a zoom link (below) for those that cannot attend in person. This will be available as view only\, without public comments\, as we hope to be fully engaged with the audience at the event. We highly recommend joining in person if you are able\, but we are also happy to be able to offer this option to interested individuals. \nJoin Zoom Meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday\, 2/13/25:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/89998745658\nMeeting ID: 899 9874 5658\n—\nOne tap mobile\n+13017158592\,\,89998745658# US (Washington DC)\n+13052241968\,\,89998745658# US

SUMMARY:Connecting the North Country & NEK- Winter Workgroup Gathering
DESCRIPTION:On September 25th\, Connecting the North Country took place at Mohawk Falls in Colebrook\, NH\, organized by The Community Builders Hub with partners Canaan Naturally Connected\, LaPerle’s IGA\, and Mohawk Falls. The event brought together 86 participants from 24 towns for roundtable discussions on 11 key community topics of interest\, fostering networking and relationship-building in a relaxed atmosphere. \nIn response to participant feedback\, a follow up event is taking place: Connecting the North Country & NEK- Winter Workgroup Gathering to be held January 9th\, 5-7 PM at the Canaan Elementary School multipurpose room (cafeteria) in Canaan\, VT.  Conversations will focus on the top four issues identified by residents of northern Coos County\, NH\, and northeastern Essex County\, VT.  This event aims to build relationships\, review insights from the September gathering\, and develop action plans to strengthen our communities. The gathering is a community-led effort organized by The Community Builders Hub\, Canaan Naturally Connected\, and the Canaan School\, which has generously offered space. \nThere is now an exciting addition for the gathering that you won’t want to miss!  Guest speaker Brian Laperle\, of the North Country Community Recreation Center (NCCRC) board of directors\, as well as the Community Builders Hub board\, will be providing a brief update about the status of the Wellness Center development that the Rec. Center board has been working on with Upper Connecticut Valley Hospital in recent years. They are looking for community input and for stakeholders to come together around this development.  Interestingly\, the plans for this center tie into the key topics that the public will be discussing at this event\, (Wellness Support Services\, Gathering Places\, Youth Opportunities and Communication/Event Planning).  It will be exciting to see what attendees come up with for ideas and actions to move ideas forward in the betterment of the local communities!   \nAll community members are invited from the area to participate in this free gathering\, (including teens\, adults and seniors). Free childcare will be provided by the Canaan Key Club\, allowing parents to fully engage.  A complimentary buffet meal of soups\, breads\, cookies\, and water will be served\, thanks to contributions from The Community Builders Hub\, Canaan Naturally Connected\, April’s Maple\, and Solomon’s Store. It is encouraged to invite those you feel would add energy and ideas to the discussions.\n\nThe proposed agenda and discussion topics can be found here.  As capacity is limited\, registration is required by January 6th at this link. Questions may be directed to Britni Haley of The Community Builders Hub at britni@thecbh.org or 802-277-1974.

SUMMARY:Senior Thanksgiving Lunch
DESCRIPTION:By meeting with Echo Valley Village’s property manager and the Pittsburg Key Club\, we have found an opportunity to work together on a project to benefit the seniors living at this apartment complex in Pittsburg.  As a way to bring the senior residents together and build community\, we are hosting a free Thanksgiving lunch on Nov. 22 at 12:30.  This was made possible with turkeys provided by the Colebrook Food Pantry\, operated by Area Churches Working Together\, and other food & supply contributions from the partners involved. We can’t wait to bring this joyful event to the community room at Echo Valley Village\, and continue to find ways to bring social connectedness to the seniors of the area. \nAny questions about the event may be directed to Britni Haley: britni@thecbh.org.

SUMMARY:Youth Winter Clothing Drive
DESCRIPTION:As we enter the season of giving\, a Youth Winter Clothing Drive has been organized by The Community Builders Hub\, as a way to recycle items\, and outfit local children with outerwear for the upcoming cold weather season.  This idea came about from identifying trends in outreach to a range of different North Country neighbors.  It was developed with collaborations with local schools\, the Family Resource Center\, Helping Hands North\, the Colebrook PTO and local grocery stores.  Collection bins have been set up in the entryway of LaPerle’s IGA in Colebrook and at Solomon’s Store in West Stewartstown\, where used or new items can be donated up until November 7th. \nWe are primarily looking for the essentials of used boots\, jackets and snow pants\, in good condition\, in all youth sizes.  We also have requests from some of the local schools for new youth winter gloves\, sweatpants and socks\, for when kids get wet at school.  As the cold weather arrives\, please go through your winter outerwear and see what your kids have outgrown that could still be used by others. Any used items donated should be clean\, washed and without stains or holes. We are a community that supports each other\, and this is a great way to share.  We want to make sure that all kids have what they need to be warm\, help save families money to use for other needs\, and keep items out of the landfill– a triple win! \nFamilies from around the region are invited to come select winter gear for their children (from the collected items) on Saturday\, November 9th from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Colebrook Academy & Elementary School Cafeteria during the Colebrook PTO’s Holiday Craft Fair.  Items will be offered free of charge.  Any leftover winter clothing will be donated to the local schools to fill gaps in backup supply for kids\, and remaining items will be given to Helping Hands North of Colebrook to offer in their thrift store.  If you’d like to make a monetary donation towards this effort or get involved as a partner or volunteer\, please email britni@thecbh.org.  For more information\, see Hub Happenings at www.thecbh.org.

SUMMARY:Day of Caring in Colebrook
DESCRIPTION:On September 20th\, Granite United Way’s Northern Region Day of Caring will take place in Colebrook\, coordinated in partnership with The Community Builders Hub\, with additional support from The Neil & Louise Tillotson Fund\, White Mountain Rotary and A House to Home Realty. Day of Caring is an annual volunteer event that mobilizes thousands of volunteers to assist hundreds of local nonprofits\, who may have limited capacity to accomplish short-term\, wishlist projects.  \nStemming from community feedback\, three projects will be undertaken for the day: \n\nClean up and planting of perennial flowers at the dummy intersection between A Notch Above Real Estate and the former Howard’s Restaurant. Please get in touch if you have any perennials to contribute from your home gardens!\nBeaver Brook Falls trail clean-up and polyurethaning of benches & picnic tables. The Colebrook Kiwanis Club is a leader on this effort\, as they maintain the park\, but many hands make light work! Anyone able to help remove debris from the trails (and ideally off of the property)\, would be a great help. Please bring a rake if you have one.\nSprucing up the River Walk by removing litter\, cleaning off the storywalk stands and trimming any small encroaching vegetation on the trails.\n\nOrganizers are seeking support from local volunteers to help out with the projects. Why volunteer?  It makes a tangible difference in the lives of those in need. It fosters a sense of teamwork and contributes to building a stronger\, more supportive community.  There will be a morning volunteer shift from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. and an afternoon shift to finish up projects from 12-3 p.m.   \nThe day will kick off at 9 a.m. at the Municipal Parking Lot just off of Main Street in Colebrook at the Community Builders Hub tent\, where coffee\, water\, donuts and tee-shirts will be offered to volunteers as they split up into teams to tackle projects.  A complimentary pizza lunch will be available for participants at the Colebrook Town Hall at noon\, as well.   \nTo sign up to volunteer\, please fill out this form. Event contacts are Laura Boucher (Laura.boucher@graniteuw.org) and Britni Haley (britni@thecbh.org). It is recommended to wear gloves and work clothes on the Day of Caring. Day of Caring event details and updates can be found at:  https://www.facebook.com/events/1006428117796670

SUMMARY:Children’s Playgroup in Stratford
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to join this fun\, free program on Friday mornings!\nIn talking to community members at events\, parents and caregivers often expressed an interest in having more activities for children 5 & under. The library staff and trustees were more than happy to let us use their recently renovated children’s room for a weekly program and the town gladly offered up use of the pavilion next door\, as well as the park. \nIt’s a great opportunity for both adults and children to socialize and enjoy some fun activities. Mornings start in the library with playtime\, snacktime (bring your own snack) and storytime\, then transitions to active play outdoors.  Inside supplies are available for coloring\, as well as a selection of toys\, and an outdoor bin of toys/sports equipment is positioned at the basketball court for the public to use.  Kids love bringing their bikes to ride on the basketball court\, and we have bubbles\, balls to kick around and lots of fun to be had. Participants are co-designing programs and ideas are always welcome. \nThrough this simple idea to fill an identified need by gathering at an underutilized space at a set time each week\, more people are getting involved and connected in their community. We started the playgroup in September 2023 and it is now a volunteer-led program.  Drop in on a Friday at 9:30 a.m. to gather with little ones! \nLearn more on Facebook at Stratford Children’s Playgroup.

SUMMARY:Summer Picnic & Play Series! #1
DESCRIPTION:We are teaming up with the Family Resource Center to host a series of three “Picnic & Play” meet-ups on Fridays at parks in the North Country this summer.  After listening to what families we were looking for\, we came up with fun offerings at three different locations that will help bring people together and take advantage of our town’s assets.  We will be offering free peanut butter & jelly sandwiches\, applesauce\, and cold bottled water for families to enjoy a picnic together\, paired with fun things to do. \nFirst up in Stratford on June 28\, we will get together at the Pavilion on the Common\, next to the Stratford Public Library.  People can sit to enjoy lunch at the picnic tables in the shade\, and the kids can even sing & dance on the stage there if they’d like!  When folks are ready we’ll head on down to the Back Street River Park to play with soccer balls\, basketballs\, bubbles & families can bring bikes or scooters to ride around on the court. \nWe hope that these opportunities to gather will increase social connections in our communities\, open up eyes to the wonderful places we have in our towns\, and provide fun ways for families to enjoy time together this summer.
