The Magic of Letting Go

Lately, I keep coming back to one thing: when we trust young people, really trust them, something shifts. In late December, the Spartans on a Mission (SOAM), a group of 9th–12th graders, had no plan other than to simply show up at the Country Village Nursing Home in...

The Power of Yes

August 5, 2025

Sometimes, the biggest changes in a community don’t start with a plan or a meeting. They start with one simple word: yes.

When someone says yes to trying something new, it creates ripples. One yes turns into another, and suddenly, what seemed small begins to reshape a whole community.

Recently, we’ve seen this in action. A single yes to line dancing has grown into events in three different towns, raising money for Littleton Area Mutual Aid and bringing neighbors together to stomp, laugh, and connect. Another yes brought music and cruise nights together in Whitefield, creating a weekly gathering filled with conversation, dancing, and a feeling of belonging.

A yes from the select board brought back the town ice rink. Now kids are learning to skate, neighbors are helping each other, and small acts of generosity are multiplying. Several neighbors stepped up to repair a porch damaged in a storm, and a local business donated their time and skills, sparking even more support.

These yeses may look simple from the outside, but they build trust. They connect neighbors and they remind us that community doesn’t have to be complicated, it just has to be human.

This work isn’t tidy. It’s not mapped out or perfectly planned. But that’s what makes it real. One yes leads to another until suddenly the web of connection is strong enough to hold all of us.

No roadmap needed. As Doc Brown once said in Back to the Future, “Roads? Where we’re going, we don’t need roads.”
