From Neighborly Chat to Community Success

July 3, 2024

A serendipitous meeting with a North Country neighbor led to the beginning of our Homestead Classes in Groveton. A question we begin with here at the Hub is “Did a neighbor ask for it?” In this case the answer is yes! Kayla Leighton a young homesteader and farmer living in Stark had mentioned wanting to get more locals involved in homesteading and had an interest in sharing her passion for old fashioned living in a modern world. I had mentioned wanting to bring more opportunities for neighbors to gather in the Groveton area. Together we pulled our resources and within three weeks of that meeting we held our first class, “Let’s Make Butter” and it was a blast.

Through mutual support, we created an environment where neighbors showcased what an interconnected community looks like. Through our recent classes, new connections were made that have sparked ideas for future collaborations with even more neighbors who have talents to share. People who live just streets apart had never met until they showed up to the classes. This small act of collaboration highlighted the immeasurable power of community building, and it has been amazing to watch it all unfold.
